Judy Staten Manning

Judy Staten Manning, 68, died Wednesday, January 8, 2014 with her family by her side.

Judy was born May 15, 1945 to Arlie Ellis and Margaret G. Hagan Staten in Wagoner, Oklahoma.

Judy was the 7th of 8 children born to her parents. Judy had Rheumatic fever around age 6 and their family doctor recommended that they take her to Arizona. The Staten family packed up and moved to Pima County, Arizona. Judy grew up in Marana, Arizona where she graduated from Marana High School. Judy's next older brother, Arlie E. ''Bud'' Staten, Jr. joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, less than 100 miles from home.

In August of 1962, J. Rives Manning, Jr., a young man from North Carolina was transferred by the U.S. Army to Fort Huachuca and worked in the same office as ''Bud''. Judy's mother felt sorry for that kid from NC, who was over 2,000 miles from home and she told ''Bud'' to invite him home for a home cooked meal. ''Judge'' gladly accepted the invitation. Several months later, ''Judge'' and Judy began dating and they were married in May 1963.

Judy was predeceased by her parents; two older brothers, Barney O. Staten and Jack E. Staten; a sister, Jean Staten Himebrook and her son John William Manning.

Judy is survived by her husband, J. Rives ''Judge'' Manning, Jr.; their son, Arlie Rives Manning and wife Erica; one granddaughter, Charlotte Reese ''Charlie'' Manning of Youngsville; two brothers, Arlie E. Staten, Jr. (Velma), and Mickey L. Staten (Cathy); two sisters, Lavonne S. Harle (Louis), and Bonnie S. Stotler (James); many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

When her children came along, Judy was active in her church as a Sunday school teacher; in the PTAs at each school; as a Cub Scout pack leader; and in the Roanoke Valley Youth Fellowship (Little League) program. She was active in many organizations in the area and was a volunteer at the HRMC Health Link in Roanoke Rapids. She was active in the Women of the Church at the churches she attended, Citizens for a Sound Economy and Church Women United for many years.

''Judge'' and Judy formed Halifax Farmers Insurance Service, Inc. in 1981 and she worked there as an independent insurance agent for over twenty years. She was active in the Stanley White Presbyterian Church for many years. In 2007, Judy and ''Judge'' transferred their church membership to the Rosemary United Methodist Church, where she was active until the last few months of her final illness.
